A visit with Grandpa & Grandma

My maternal grandparents live in Pawnee, about an hour & 1/2 drive from Edmond.  It's not too far, but it's not very close either so we don't get to see them as much as I would like my girls to see them.  We always go up for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, major holidays are spent with them at their house.  I have 4 cousins who are all married & have 2 children each, Grandma & Grandpa's house is VERY crowded! On a good holiday, there are about 25 people in their house!!  Grandpa has trouble hearing anything, so with that many people in one house, it's hard to talk to him.  (Timmy, the ONLY grandson, can talk to Grandpa in a way that he can hear him...and everyone in the county can hear him too.)
Easter 2013, everyone was at Grandma & Grandpa's house.  Grandpa had a terrible cough & everyone was very concerned!  About a month later, my mom called me to tell me that they had been with Grandpa in the emergency room the night before.  He had been coughing so much that he couldn't breathe.  They called the home health care nurse & she was concerned & his lips were turning blue.  They called Timmy & Timmy got the ambulance out there.  It was the first time Grandpa had ridden in an ambulance!  They gave him 2 breathing treatments & decided to send him home.
We had a free weekend & thought we needed to go see them when we could really visit & not have 25 other people there.
Grandpa didn't cough as much as he had been & when he did cough, it didn't sound near as bad as before.
Grandpa & Grandma's wedding anniversary was April 26th.  They have been married 66 years!  (Grandpa is 89 & Grandma just turned 84).
Since Grandpa been on his oxygen more at night, he's been having vivid dreams!  He told me that he dreamed that he was at the church (they got married at the pastor's house) & he & the preacher were standing at the front, waiting on Grandma.  The preacher leaned over to him & said "Is she coming? Is she here?" & Grandpa looked in the audience & said, "Yes, she's right there!" & he went in the audience, got her & brought her to the front & they got married!  He thought that was a funny dream!!  I thought that was really sweet dream!  After 66 years together, he would still chose her to marry!
(I think that Jesus is like that.  He & God are at the front, waiting on you & God asks where you are, Jesus seeks you & goes & gets you!!)
Then they told us about their real wedding: Grandma still had a few weeks of HS left.  She wore a blue suit.  Grandpa wore a nice shirt & pants.  A lot of their friends were going to the courthouse & getting married, but Grandpa & Grandma wanted to be married by a preacher.  They wanted to get married earlier, but something about the blood test was messed up so they had to wait a few weeks.
They went to the preacher's house, they had 2 witnesses (I forgot who she said, but it was family) & got married.
Grandpa told us about riding his horse to school.  He graduated when he was 16.  He would ride his horse to school (a one room school house) a lady about a block from the school had a barn that he tied his horse up in & walked to school.

"When in Rome..." Florida/Disney trip 2013

Scott & I had been planning a trip to Florida to see Tori, Russ & Sadie since they moved there in October 2011.  We thought if we are going to Florida, we might as well go to Disney World, right? "When in Rome..."

So we had booked our trip in early January for several reasons but one of the main reasons was it was an off season for Disney & we would be there for Caraline's 6th birthday!  We knew we were be drivng so we picked the most southern route we could to hopefully avoid any icy/snow weather.  Thankfully, we had great weather on the way there, no rain, ice or snow.

So we planned on leaving for Florida on January 2nd, be at my sister's in Jacksonville on the evening of the 4th, stay with them Saturday, hit the beach, on the 6th leaving for our first day at Disney.

Everything went as planned...almost!

Let's start at the beginning....

This has been one of the worse flu seasons in years!  Right before Christmas, both girls came home from school after the parties with a fever.  So they missed Friday before the Christmas break.  Lydia only had a slight fever that day, Caraline had a slight fever on & off for 4 days.  By Christmas, they were well.
It snowed some on Christmas so we decided to stay at home instead of going to Woodward that day.  Scott's uncle had died a few days before Christmas & his funeral was Thursday after so we just thought we would go up to Woodward then.  Wednesday afternoon, Scott's mom called & said John had the flu & Sherry, Sarah & John would not be coming.  Scott thought he would just go to the funeral on Thursday....until he woke up that morning feeling like he had been hit by a mack truck!!!  Scott had the flu!!

Every year on New Year's Eve we have friends over to our house.  It is a fun tradition we have with 3 families.  On NYE, after 6 days, Scott was still running a fever!  He finally got into the DR & found out he had pneumonia.  They started him on a Z-pac & we were hoping he would feel well enough to go to Florida in 2 days!

New Years day Scott stayed in bed so he would feel better.  He decided that we should wait another day to leave. So he called & moved all our hotel reservations to the following day.  Instead of leaving Wednesday like we had planned, we would leave Thursday.  I had packed a few things for the girls, but didn't pack anything Tuesday since I would have an extra day to pack.

Wedneday morning comes & Scott jumps out of bed & says at 8:30am, "Let's GO!! If we leave by noon, we can miss Dallas traffic!"  I freaked out a little, but hustled to pack the girls, me, the car for a 6 day total drive & everything for Disney! I was done packing everything in the car by 11:45!!  I was SO proud of myself!!  Was the house a little bit in disarray?  YES!!  Was the car packed & we had EVERYTHING to survive this trip & Disney?  YES!!  I walk in the house & Scott has a glazed look on his face.  He was pooped out!  He says, "Maybe we should wait until tomorrow..."  I was SO mad!!  All that was missing from the car was all four of us in it driving out of the driveway!!

I said that I would drive & he could rest & let's get on the road!  He promised to drive through Dallas, & I would drive the rest.  Thingso got off to a bumpy start when we stopped to use the restroom & Lydia refused to wear her tennis shoes!  She ALWAYS wears cowboy boots & we told her she had to wear tennis shoes at Disney.)  We threatened to go home if she continued to have a fit over shoes.  It happened a few more times but she FINALLY got used to the shoes.

We made it to Shreveport, LA that night.  We stopped about 6pm at the hotel.  We got dinner & got ready for bed so we could get a early start the next day.  Scott didn't sleep AT ALL that night!!  He said his eyes never closed!  I drove for the second day.  We thought that Scott was sleep in the car that day, but never did.  We left Shreveport about 8:30am & we were driving to Destin, FL.

We made it to the Florida state line at 5-ish pm!  Scott was exhausted!  I was worried about driving through Pensicola at rush hour.  I had driven through Mobile, AL at 4:30-ish & going through the tunnel at rush hour, my nerves were fried!!

We drove through Pensicola to Destin in the dark for TWO HOURS!!  We were tired, & the girls we getting restless!  Finally after 11 hours, we made it to the hotel!  Scott thought he would crash....not so!!  He slept very little for a second night!!  I told him he needed to sleep or he would be a walking zombie at Disney & we couldn't do that!
That next morning, after I brushed Lydia's hair, she kind of blacked out for a few seconds.  She had not eaten much the day before & had refused to eat her dinner last night!  We quickly went to the breakfast in the lobby so she would eat.  She was scared & we were too!  Thank goodness it didn't happen again!

That 3rd day of driving was LONG!!  We were so ready to get to Tori's house!!  Scott called his DR & was able to get a script for ambein.  He was a little scared to take it since he has strange reactions to meds, but THANKS BE TO GOD he was fine, able to sleep & was good to go come Sunday!!

Tori & Russ took us to the Jacksonville Beach on Saturday afternoon.  It was really windy & chilly.  We only stayed a few minutes, but I got plenty of pictures.  The girls would have stayed longer, but Tori's ears were hurting & Scott was still not 100% well.

Sunday's weather forcast was rainy.  Scott didn't really want to go to Disney in the rain so we decided to play Sunday by ear.  Sunday morning came & no sign of rain, so we hit the road.  It was a little over a 2 hour drive to Orlando.  We got to DisneyWorld about 12pm.  Our hotel was amazing!!  We stayed at Art of Animation in the Little Mermaid room!  It was really cool!

Sunday afternoon, we got on the bus to go to Epcot. Scott wanted to ride "Soarin''" a new ride.  There was NO CROWDS anywhere at Epcot!!  It was SO nice!!  No lines, we walked on the rides, with a VERY little to NO wait....except for Soarin!!  They were out of Fast Passes & it was a 80 minute wait to ride. So we rode all the other rides without any wait!!  We took a boat ride from Mexico to Germany!  We has some ate delicious food in Moracco & saw Belle!!  Caraline & I got her autograph & picture!  Lydia didn't want to.  She later told me that evening that she really wanted Ariel's autograph & picture.  She told me if she acted scared to MAKE her do it & be brave because she really wanted it!

Monday morning, we decided to go to Magic Kingdom.  The bus that morning was PACKED!!  We were a little surprised by the crowds considering it was so light at Epcot the day before.  But I think Magic Kingdom is the most popular & good for the littler kids.
The first thing we did was hop on the train.  We got off at the Dumbo ride.  We did Dumbo, the carisel, drove the cars, It a small world ride, Ariel's new ride, the tea cups, all the classic rides you think of when you think of a day at Disney!
Monday was the chilliest & rainy of the days we were there.  But we were prepared with 88 cent ponchos from Walmart, not $20 ponchos from Disney!!  We watched the 3pm parade & after that, we saw the princesses:  Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty & Cinderella!  Lydia didn't really like that.  I think she may have been embarressed.  Or maybe she felt like she was too big for that, I don't know.
We ate some hot dogs that were SUPER YUMMY & then decided to go back to the hotel since it was raining pretty steady.
We decided before we left to ride the monorail. We rode it around once & then Scott told the girls we could ride it around again.  I didn't think we should have considering that A LOT of people were waiting to get on to go to the parking lot.  Scott insisted that we stay on.  I was a little miffed because now we were taking people's spot that could have gotten on if we left.  We started the second time around, & the monorail stopped.  It was a few minutes & the captain came on & said the monorail in front of us was having trouble, but that we would be going soon.....we waited & waited & waited!!  It seemed like forever (maybe 10-15 minutes) then we finally started again.  I looked at Scott & said "I don't believe in karma, but if there was, THIS IS IT!!"  We finally made it back to the park & got on the bus.

Tuesday morning was Caraline's 6th birthday!!  (January 8) She was SO excited!!  She got a pin that said "Happy Birthday Caraline" & everywhere she went the cast members said, "Happy Birthday Princess!"  That day we saw Woody & Jesse, Tinkerbelle & Perriwinkle & Mickey Mouse!  The girls ate an ice cream stick that was shaped like Mickey Mouse!  They LOVED it!
Then we rode our first roller coaster!  Big Thunder Mountain!  All the other rides that we had ridden were slow up & down rides, or moving around a story.  The girls weren't sure at first & even when on the ride Caraline was asking when it was going to be over, but afterwards, they said they liked it!!  We went to the Hall of Presidents for mom! I thought it was AWESOME!!  We rode the people mover in Tomorrow Land.  It goes through Space Mountain.  It STOPPED in Space Mountain!!  (Space Mountain is in the pitch dark!)  We were a little freaked out, but it started again!! (sooner than the monorail the day before!)  Before we left, we HAD to go wait 30 minutes to see Ariel for Lydia!!  She was so excited!!  Scott thought Ariel was really pretty!!  The looks on their faces as she talked to them was awe & amazement excited to swim!!  We told Caraline it would probably be the ONLY time she could swim outside on her birthday!!
We ate dinner in the food court at our hotel.  The food was AMAZING & Caraline picked out some chocolate covered rice crispy treats for her birthday!  I also took that time to buy things in the gift shop.  I also packed some things that we didn't need for the morning in the car so we could go to Animal Kingdom in the morning & just come back to the car & drive to Tori's house.

Wednesday was our last day.  We packed the rest of the things in the car & headed for the buses one last time.  My feet were still sore from the day before!!  Animal Kingdom was ok.  It was nice & green & the Circle of Life Tree was cool.  We saw Minnie Mouse there.  We rode the safari & that was really neat!  The girafes were SO close they could have reached in & licked my camera!!
Needless to say, Animal Kingdom was not our favorite & we were SUPER tired & only stayed 2 hours & decided to head back to Tori's.

As we were driving out of the parking lot, Scott was already planning our next Disney vacation!! :)

We got back to Jasksonville about 2-ish & the girls were really to see Sadie, Tori & Russ & Sunny, the dog!  We stayed Wednesday night with the Furgason's & watched the weather since Lousianna was getting hammered with flooding rains!!

We left Thursday morning about 9, the same time Tori & Sadie were leaving for work.  We drove all day.  We were keeping an eye on the weather.  About Mobile, AL we could see a mean looking line of storms.  We were trying to make it to Moss Pointe, MS, close to Gulf Port.  The gust front hit us hard out of Mobile & thankfully, we were right next to an exit, so we just exited & waited for the heavy rain to pass!!  We came into Moss Pointe & got a hotel & ate at Cracker Barrel.

Friday, we left Moss Pointe about 8am.  When we were in Baton Rouge, we hit some more rain, a heavy batch.  A semi-truck in the other lane had to slam on it's brakes & started jack-kniving in front of us!  Thank goodness, God's hand was on us & we were untouched!!
We tried to get off somewhere close to Layfette, LA for gas , but 2 gas stations were UNDER WATER!!  Pretty creepy sight!
That evening, we made it to Forne, TX about 6pm.  We decided to eat some dinner & let the Dallas Friday night traffic die down.   About 7:30pm, we thought it was be ok, but we still ended up in a crawl in downtown Dallas!!  At about 9pm, we were at the TX/OK state line.  When we saw that it was only 100 miles to OKC, we thought that was NOTHING considering we had driven 5 days total!!  We made it home Friday night about 11pm.

What an amazing & unforgetable vacation!!  Can't wait to do it again in January 2015!!

Lydia's 8th birthday: SPY party!

WOW!!  It's been a LONG time since I've posted on this blog!

I wanted to post all about Lydia's 8th birthday party: SPY party. Once she watched "Spy Kids" in July,  she started planning a spy birthday party.  4 months of planning for this party at our house & some amazing pinterest ideas, we came up with a super unique party! :)

We sent out invitations that said to RSVP for the password to Headquarters.  I had a few parents who really played along with it!  Really cute & fun! The password was "spies rock".

We decided to go more of a "spy training" theme.  So as the kids came to the door, we asked them to say the password.  Then we had a code they had to break while we waited for everyone to arrive.

Then the training exercises were "Disguises 101", "Evidence Destroying", "Memory training", "Fingerprinting", & "Bomb squad"

"Code Breaking"- I had made up a code & 2 sentences that they had to use the code to break.

"Disguises 101"- a game with 2 teams, a bag of articles of clothing for each team (jacket, hat, scarf, gloves) & they had a relay to see who could put all the clothing on the fastest.

"Evidence Destroying"-eating birthday donuts & fruit & the juice boxes had little mustaches on the straws.

(open gifts)

"Memory Training"- take a cookie sheet of small items & let the kids look at it.  Have them close their eyes & take one thing away.  See who can guess what is missing.

"Fingerprinting"- fingerprint art.  I got a few fingerprint art books from the library & the kids had a great time making pictures out of their fingerprints.

Presented the certificate of spy training with goodie bag (including a mustache, flashlight, notebooks, smarties & magnifying glass.)

"Bomb Squad"- I had black balloons (hidden in back bedroom until the last of the party) & everyone held a balloon & on the count of three, they were to jump on it & pop it!  Really cool!

Lydia had the BEST time ever!!

Friday's Five (Feb. 24th, 2012)

1. February is a "birthday month" in the Boyle house! My birthday is the 15th & Scott 's is the 22nd. This year we are 36 & 41. Scott & I had a get together with "the regular suspects": Cox's, Churchwell's, & Rosacker families. We had great food, Mary made a yummy cake for our birthdays & the kids played Wii ALL night!:)

2. This has been such a mild winter! I'm itching to get back behind the camera!! I have a new 50mm lens & I'm learning more about my Paintshop Pro editing program. I love looking at other photographers & using some of they are willing to share!:)

3. I loved the pictures I got of the girls for Valentine's day! They did a good job of listening to me!:) (That is usually a problem)

4. I LOVE the library! I have 60 books & magazines checked out right now!! I need to get Caraline her own card so I can get more!! I have a rolling crate for all my books & at times, it's not big enough!

5. We went to a Murder Mystery FLOCK social this month. Scott & I were nerds! Mary's character was Scott's character's sister.....& Scott was the MURDER VICTIM!!! And to top it off, MARY killed him!! So funny & so much fun!
